The Executioner's Scythe: How It Is Painted, in a Countdown from Ten to Zero

A sentence, a scythe… and a fate that could still be changed
The executioner's scythe intended for Buckbeak the hippogriff arrives at Callejón Figurón. It is a piece inspired by Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban that takes us back to one of the saga's most suspenseful moments.
The video shows how it is painted with an on-screen countdown, from ten to zero. Here we explain it step by step.
Ten and nine: the piece still grey
The countdown starts with the scythe still unpainted: the blade and the handle are two grey pieces, on a paper towel full of paint stains from earlier work.
They are handled carefully, by hand, because the handle is long and thin.

Eight and seven: the airbrush and the dark base
The airbrush comes in. You can see its metal cup and a bottle of thinner beside it. The piece goes from grey to a matt black, which will be the base for all the colour.
The paper underneath catches the leftover paint, which is why it is spattered with bluish greens and dark tones.

Six, five and four: the brush and the palette
Now comes the brushwork. On the table there are bottles of paint in olive, bronze and gold, and a very fine brush used to go over the handle, almost strand by strand.
This is the part that gives the handle its character, with its carved reliefs, which show better the more they are worked.

Three, two and one: metal and ageing
In the last numbers the blade is worked on. A bottle of silver paint appears and the blade goes from black to worn metal, with lighter and darker areas.
With the last pass of the airbrush, the aged finish gains depth and the blade shows its ancient, menacing look.

Zero: the relic in its display case
At zero, the scythe appears finished, inside its vertical display case with a dark frame, on a pedestal. This way you can appreciate the whole silhouette, from the blade to the end of the handle.
Executioner's Scythe measures 18 cm high, 7 cm wide and 2 cm deep. It is made of ultra-detailed premium resin and hand-painted and detailed with an aged effect. Each piece is printed, assembled and painted individually, so it may show small variations.
